Exclusive: Zdot Talks Golden Boot EP, Production Style & More

UK super producer Zdot has worked with the best of them, including Lady Leshurr, Wiley and Bugzy Malone but now he delivers his 6 track “Golden Boot” EP. With his solo body of work out now, he talks with Grime Culture for an exclusive interview. Read the full interview below.

Grime Culture: Why did you feel now was the time to release ‘Golden Boot’?

Zdot: I’ve been working on my own project for a while behind the scenes, this felt like the perfect time to release the EP!  It’s the warm up for what’s to come later this year!

GC: How did you determine who to put on the production?

Z: All of the collaborations for the EP happened really naturally with us working on other music before we made these tracks… I knew exactly who I wanted on all of the beats and managed to secure all of the line ups.

GC: Was it difficult to recruit all of the artists for the songs?

Z: Not at all, I made 3 tracks with Berna the same day we recorded ‘Bro Code’, cooked up ‘Scatter’ with Young T & Bugsey in the same session we made ‘Gangland’, I sent Wiley the beat for ‘Coasting’ the same time we made ‘Call The Shots’, There were multiple tracks being made for everyones projects while i was making ‘Golden Boot’ which made the artists happy to be involved.

GC: Which artists did you want on the Golden Boot but couldn’t get?

Z: I was very happy with the track-list for the EP, i chose to showcase some of my favourite up n coming UK artists alongside legends like Wiley. The artists that I rate which didn’t make it onto ‘Golden Boot’ are on my album which i’m working on at the moment!

GC: How do you know when the chemistry is right with an artist?

Z: I think it’s when you don’t need to talk about what you’re about to make. For example, when I’m in studio with Eyez, i’m usually making a beat when he walks in the room and he will start writing and vibing with it straight away and within a few hours we have another banger!

GC: Are there any producers you have great chemistry with?

Z: Krunchie! We’ve produced a lot of bangers together and every time we’re in studio with an artist they’re amazed with how quick and well we work. We are telepathic when it comes to making music.

GC: How long did it take you to find your sound of production?

Z: The basis of the ‘Z’ sound comes from the drums. I started playing drums when I was 8 and experimented with all kinds of percussion. I think the period between 2007-2008 when i made Ghetts ‘Artillery’ and my ‘Dirty Date’ Instrumental I cemented a dark/hard hitting production style that was unique in the UK. My sound is always evolving and this is displayed on ‘Golden Boot’.

GC: What’s next for Zdot?

Z: Will be releasing more videos from ‘Golden Boot’, new ‘Zdot’ singles, more releases from my label ‘101 Music’, Productions for the UK’s top artists… There’s a few other game changing moves that you guys will be hearing about before the end of the year.
